Ugandan Children's Choir, Chosen
7:30 - 8:30 PM
Chosen, a singing and dancing group of seven Ugandan children, ranging in age from 8-12 years old, are touring the United States. The children are in the care of Action for Empowerment (AOET). AOET is an independent, indigenous non-governmental organization in Uganda that provides an education – formal and/or vocational – to desperately poor orphans whose parents have died of AIDS and to other vulnerable children. AOET also assists children with AIDS, and widows who have lost their spouses to the disease. The children who comprise Chosen represent thousands of AIDS orphans through song and dance. Debuting in 2003, Chosen has achieved acclaim wherever they have appeared. Sharing their struggle and personal testimonies, they share a diverse repertoire of song and dance throughout Uganda, Kenya and the United States. CHOSEN appeared at several Saratoga area schools and churches in January 2008 to standing-room-only crowds. They are returning from September 8-13 for 14 events at area schools, churches and other locations. On September 14 they will be returning to AOET in Uganda. AOET moves children from the streets into families, and supports children with direct school sponsorship funding. Children who are sponsored receive not only an education but a safe mentoring atmosphere at school to help them grow and mature. For many Ugandan children, the expense of the required uniform alone is enough to prevent them from attending school. In addition to direct help of children and adults, AOET provides Empowerment Programs to help families who have adopted children into their homes gain practical skills that enable them to be self-supporting. The Empowerment Program offers courses in Tailoring, African Arts & Crafts, Knitting, Computer Training, Driver Training, & HIV/AIDS Training. For more information on AOET, visit their website at www.aoetusa.com. |
